What is IPTV?

Internet Protocol TV is quite simply a method of delivering a multitude of different traditional TV broadcast formats such as Freeview, Analogue, and Satellite over technologies that are standard in a computer network.

There are two main flavours of IPTV that are available at the moment:

• Internet TV, sometimes known as IPTV over DSL

  This first flavour describes distributing IPTV on a wide scale over a wide area network (WAN) for example your home broadband connection. Distributing TV over wide area networks requires major infrastructure and bandwidth and has been in use commercially in the UK since 1999 on a small scale but is now being adopted by more published companies such as BT for delivering on demand services as well as a limited channel selection over your broadband link. It has also been adopted by many of the broadcast companies such as the BBC in the form of the iplayer

  This is not the type of IPTV that Vivo provides as it is not suitable to environments that require TV to be delivered locally from a central point, such as hotels, MTUs, leisure parks and student halls to name a few.

• IPTV

  This second flavour of IPTV describes distributing TV over a local IP network using CAT5/6 and fibre. This is the type of IPTV that we here at Vivo Digital provide. There are many advantages to using IPTV over a standard coax based system, the first and most important is the difference in picture quality. VivoTV provides the facility to distribute full quality Freeview and Satellite TV as well as any other video sources you may wish to use, such as IP cameras, CCTV and promotional Videos, with exceptional picture quality.
